Suspension (dodgy) question....

Post by thefastestMelv on Thu May 10, 2018 1:34 pm

Im asking here instead of facetube as I can't deal with the number of "DOnt do that replies"

Has anyone here (prob Nate) cut a small portion of a rear spring from a shock to lower the arse end a bit? I could do with the back of domestic waste being an inch lower......I don't want a hard tail with a trailer thats 2/3 the weight and bigger than the bike I'm towing it with.
How easy are shocks to take apart? Is just compress em and slide the collar off?

Yea I'm sure I've done that in the past.

Recent Springy Mc Springface investigations have told me that a spring gets stiffer as you remove coils so consider this if you're drastically shortening it.

I also remember heating the top 1/2 turn of spring wire until it was cherry red which allowed me to push it down on the floor (non flammable) and give the spring a normal flat end, of course this was touched up with a grinder.
Forinstance this is the first google hit with drawings showing this end prep:
https://www.speeddirect.com/index.php/tech-info/suspension-handling-information/lowering-by-cutting-a-coil-spring
Google also returns many hits to the boy racer types doing this sort of thing.

Just remember that it might be a MOT fail if the spring is physically loose with the shock at full travel, I know it's a fail for cars.

'relaxing' a spring with an oxy torch used to be a common lowering mod for old cars but it fucks with the ride like you wouldnt believe. I'm not normally a 'do it proper' kind of guy ut in this case id deffo be looking for a new spring/shock instead, it aint worth the hassle

assuming it's a monoshock bike, can't you use different size dog bones to lower the rear?

and VJ, you're becoming way too sensible!

It's the 125 Chinese scooter I was given.
It's a dual shock thing.
I might just go online and find some shorter shocks.

I recently did just that - cut an inch off a spring, then fitted it and wished i`d left it alone `cos it was now too short/soft.... maybe.
So i remidied it by heating a coil up and stretching back to the approx original length.
Fuck knows what that`s done to the properties of the spring.....

Nah, i can just afford to not have to risk my life so badly anymore. Also bigger bikes are a lot less forgiving of suspension fuckery than the stuff i used to hack on

I should let you in to some of the spring related fuckery I've done with the 1900 turbo.

Mines probably on par with yours.
I've leaned the BMW over so far that I've s
Removed paint from the cylinder heads.
My best bet is gonna be adding extra upper shock mounts and use the standard shocks.

Scrape that you're about to spend some time in a bush.
Beemer does fine with minimal care, cheapest car oil I can find 20/50 mineral and no fucking chain.
