Today, we fired up the pulsejet....
....and boy, are they loud.
I work for a company that makes all sorts of weird and wonderful teaching equipment for colleges and Uni`s, and today was the first time i`ve seen the pulsejet and ramjet in action.
I work on the first floor of this 200 year old mill and when the pulsejet was fired up directly underneath me on the ground floor it felt like the building was going to collapse - the vid does not convey the force of the initial boom when the jet first fires up. You could feel the pressure waves hitting your torso and then when it was running properly your whole body vibrated! The noise was unbelievable in that confined space.
There were other workers/office staff who got the f out of there and waited in the carpark until testing was over.
We have to notify the local houses and the pub next door that there might be a slight increase in normal volume levels and please do not be alarmed....
Cant be arsed to work out how to embed vids on here so just click the link:

Is the thing sticking out of the front the detonator?

What a lovely toy! Do you happen to know how many N of thrust it (roughly) produces? The cage seems to be part of some sort of measuring equipment...

Yes, it produced a whopping 17N of thrust......
Quite shameful really considering the amount of fuel it must of consumed and noise it produced.
You could say it was the Hardly Ableson of the jet engine world.

Re: Today, we fired up the pulsejet....
Considering the amount of moving parts, 17N isn't too shabby. Well, pulsejets aren't exactly renowned for efficiency, but they are simple enough. There's some pretty interesting math behind it, but it's probably only available in *drumroll* ze German language. ;-)
On a more serious note, Colin Furze actually had some sketches on relations between relations between lengths and diameters ages ago.
