Random new project thing!
Went to mot Leighs car and came back with this beauty!
According to Rob "I was going to break it and make some money, but then I thought I'd rather sell it to you for peanuts and see what fucked up mess of a bike you make it into!"
Sometimes having a reputation for building terrible rubbish has its advantages

That's a sweet project bike, 900 triple?
Do another wellard fighter like the CBR you had.

Yeah an old 900 Sprint, ive never ridden a triple before, have you?
I'm looking forward to building something with little to no practicality for a change!
It could very well go in a similar direction to the CBR, but first i need to find a tank that'll fit over the huge weird top tube.
And yes the arse will likely end up in the bin! Remember kids, just say no to practicality!

I think it’s a 900 Trophy, right? One hell of a trophy at that

Re: Random new project thing!
I had a '99 Triumph Tiger (one year only model, 955 carb job before they went fi) which was a triple which I found rather bland overall, engine was a bit characterless too although it pulled ok- sadly I never got around to removing the cat so it never had the triple howl I bought it for.
I did however have a slightly earlier 900 Trident (naked) as a loan bike while mine was in for some work and it sounded much better and pulled harder or at least it seemed like it did (maybe just the sweet music it made it seem that way), I like the look of them but in reality it was a long heavy bike and needed a lot of effort to turn.

I originally wanted the previous model Tiger, the better looking 'Steamer' as they called it but as always I was in too much of a rush to wait for it and just got what I could as I was impressed by a mates T509 and how horny it sounded.

And how the fuck did you get it home in the back of Leighs motor?!

Re: Random new project thing!
I was wrong Leigh got it right, it's a 1995 MK1 Trophy.
The remains of the fairings in the obligatory box o'crap that comes with every genuine-barn-find-cafe-racer-super-easy-weekend-project gave it away.

Aha, I was looking at the remaining fairing brackets and couldn't see any for a lower fairing (with fresh eyes I can see them now)- bravo Leigh!

Starterclutch on these engines tend to fail, so you might want to check that.

I did read something about that and I'm happy to say it's fine on this one. I'll be careful to keep the battery in good shape too.

And maybe fit some handlebars with heated grips on the back of your bike, so Leigh can push-start in great comfort.

Re: Random new project thing!
whatever you do to it keep the airbox, m mate had one and spent almost a year trying to get it to run right with pod filters, even had multiple dyno sessions before giving up and putting the airbox back on.
I found this hilarious as at the time I was on vulture with just disposable bbq mesh as filters and it ran clean through the rev range.

Thankfully (and weirdly) it came with a brand new one, never even been fitted.
Though I'm hoping to do away with the epicly long rubber snozzle things that reach right back to the soon-to-be-sacked-off pillion seat.

Re: Random new project thing!
Have a look at cx500 plastic maggot tanks as they have a similar frame with large single tube.

nice.
you should totally use all the take-off parts from Leigh's Virago, on that bike.
BEHOLD THE MIGHTY VIRUMPH!!!

SteF-
EsoX- funnily enough I have a CX500 tank sitting in my garden doing nowt, no key to the locked filler though- it's gonna become a plant pot if Nate doesn't want it (can't imagine it'd suit Nates build tbh)
Nate- you know it's going to need the snozzles to run properly don't you, think you need to make a feature of them- see that cover over the end of the snozzle, I bet that allows 'just' the right amount of airflow.
What about those two-part Harley tanks, fat bobs or summat?
And tell me that's not a picture of your garage with a bike lift, looks far too...organised.

Re: Random new project thing!
itl run without those hoover tube things out the back but it'l be about as powerful and heavy as a 400 superdream
Probably wouldnt be a problem for you but the rest of us like engines to turn petrol into horsepower as well as noise

.
I recon he deffo needs to bolt a CG125 tank either side leaving the tube visible so from the top it looks like a really shite attempt at the 'tank under tube' 1930s classic brit bike look lol

Re: Random new project thing!
if you bend those hoover tube things up a bit, and route them under the seat just the right way, you can fart into them for an instant power boost!

Re: Random new project thing!
Hadn't though of a CX tank, I reckon it'd look pretty great in a fucked up kind of way.
I'd take you up on the offer Hoon but I suspect it might be a bit rusty inside by now? Or you could sell it to the brown seat brigade for 5 grand.
Snozzles, maybe I should go the other way and extend them with some hoover pipe. Have'em flopping about like Mr Tickles arms as I'm riding along.
As for the Virago/Trophy hybrid I'm all for it! Reckon I should surprise Leigh with it?
